Her usual style of dress is jeans with flannel shirts or T-shirts, or khakis with polos. She can get a little fancier, but favors slacks over dresses. She does own one formal gown that she bought when she stood in her cousin’s wedding, but otherwise, she isn’t a fan of dressing up.

She has zero patience for prejudices or people who hold them. She enjoys the company of people who are authentic- that is, they are who they are because that is who they want to be.

Origin Story Mara was born to Italian immigrants living in Maine. Her parents had only one other child, born twelve years earlier and had just about given up on the idea of having any more when Mara came along. Her brother, Marc, was absolutely smitten with her and often took her on outings to parks or ice cream parlors. He used to tell his friends that having a toddler around was a chick magnet, and he was right, but the real reason he hung out with her so much is because he simply liked children. For this reason, Mara was convinced that she had two dads until she was old enough to better understand the relationship.

She was a late talker, uttering her first word at the age of 4. Her parents initially thought this meant she was developmentally disabled, but she quickly proved them wrong by being admitted to early kindergarten later that year- just two weeks shy of her fifth birthday.

When Mara was six years old, her brother joined the military. He would call home regularly just to talk to her, though. She clearly remembers watching him graduate from basic training and being fawned over by all of his military buddies.

School was easy for Mara. Making friends, however, was more of a challenge. She was quiet and reserved, which meant that most kids were not interested in making friends with her. There was one other quiet and revered child in her class by the name of Michael and he and Mara became good friends.

When she was fifteen years old, her school bought several brand new Apple IIe computers and started teaching the kids how to use them. To her own amazement, she seemed to understand how they worked on an almost intuitive level. Her teacher noticed, too, and began setting her increasingly difficult tasks. At some point, she realized that if she thought a command, the computer would do it. She told no one, however, as she was fairly sure this made her a mutant and mutants were treated poorly.

She did, however, tell her brother. She could never hide anything from him anyway and when she confided in him, he explained that the reason he could always tell if she was hiding something is because he is basically a human lie detector. He always knows when people are lying to him. It comforted her to know that she at least had him to talk to about this new ability.

She finished high school two full years early, and with her computer teacher’s advice, decided to study computer programming in college, where she excelled to the point of being found out as a mutant. The school didn’t really know what to do with this knowledge, so they just sort of swept it under the rug and ignored it, save but to double check her work to make sure she wasn’t breaking into the computer system to change her grades. Shortly after graduation, she was approached by a large bank who was beginning to worry about the sudden uptick in computer interest and wanted to make sure their system was secure. A new position was created specifically for her to find and eliminate holes in their system. They even offered her a signing bonus because of her mutant skill set.

She worked for them for two years until a side job for Professor Xavier put her at risk of being found out and targeted by powerful- and evil- men. So, reluctantly, she moved to the Xavier mansion where she joined the Xmen and took up teaching.
