Brotherhood of Mutants

Known informally in the media as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, this terrorist organization was formed by Erik Magnus Lensherr, also known as Magneto. It is a decentralized group where outcast mutants who have become radicalized by Magneto's mutant supremacist message plan acts of sabotage and destruction in order to advance their violent cause.

The Alternate Class had its first encounter with the Brotherhood at the end of June, 1990 during a parley between Magneto and Xavier at the X-Mansion. Despite taunting one another, the meeting was peaceful until Cyclops misunderstood Magneto to take responsibility for the First Class's disappearance. The resulting battle caused significant damage to the School and led to a number of students leaving.

A second encounter occurred in early August when the Alternate Class attempted to rescue captive mutants from a Department H black site in the Canadian wilderness. Cyclops and another mutant had allowed themselves to be captured in order for Cerebro to find the black site and rescue everyone. The Acolyte leader Maestro had performed a similar strategy already, leading to Magneto beating the Alternate Class to the punch. As a result, the Brotherhood disrupted the rescue effort and destroyed the facility, but not before the Alternate Class rescued a few captives, including their own people.

Only a week later, the Alternate Class encountered the Brotherhood for a third time in mid August. Once again, the Alternate Class was performing a rescue operation for a young mutant held in protective custody by the Baltimore police department from an angry mob of anti-mutant protesters. Magneto responded to the anti-mutant protest by taking the USS MISSOURI out of the Atlantic Ocean and dropping it on the crowd. The Brotherhood attacked the militant protesters, leaving the Alternate Class to once again retreat from yet another unnecessary battle.
