Serious Doubts

Mission: Episode 1: X-Odus
Location: Sonya's Room, the Mansion
Timeline: June 30

Kai hadn't been amused by the fiasco at breakfast and he felt the need, quite strangely, to talk about it with someone. He'd watched Sonya leave the table and exit to her room, giving him a clear idea about where he was going next. His tan knuckles wrapped on her door, a look of subtle displeasure on his handsome features. She might be able to help, but if not, at least she could distract him.

Sonya looked into Kai's eyes questioningly and with a taunt but she said nothing. Did she expect that? Not here and now but generally yes. Looking in his eyes and with her skills, she could read probably more than anyone else could and part of her wanted to talk but at the same time she felt it wasn't the best idea unless he wanted to talk.

"Hey, Sonya." he said, looking around with a seeming absent intention before he settled on her again. He offered a smile, charming but weak. "Mind if I come in?"

Sonya lips gently curled in a genuine friendly smile wiping the taunt from her eyes. She opened the door to her room wider and invited him in with a gesture of her free hand. "Sure. Come on in." She said motioning inside into relatively clean for a teenager room. It was very much a typical teenage girl room with various clothes hanging here and there and posters of singers and bands on the walls.

Kai looked around for a few seconds, his eyes scanning the posters on the walls and eyeing the design of things. He didn't wait for any indication of where he could sit, but instead lowered himself onto her bed. He placed a hand on the back of his neck before looking around again.

"You put me to shame, Sonya. I haven't even unpacked yet." he said, turning to look at her again.

"I am here for a few months, Kai." She giggled and closed the door. She pulled desk chair and sat on it facing Kai. "Besides, can anyone really put you to shame?" She asked lightly but then inhaled getting serious. She had a feeling there were people capable of that. "Hmm... I guess if you drove the entire states to this institute, there are." She said softer. "So... what's up?"

"What makes you think something's up?" he asked, leaning back onto his elbow in a cool and relaxed position. He was clearly getting comfortable, but on the inside he was like a storm. "Maybe I just came to hang out."

"All right..." Sonya shook her head amused and unconvinced. "Maybe it's just the timing of your hanging out that is tiny little bit suspicious." She raised her right hand closing her index finger to the thumb so close that they nearly touch each other. "So, you haven't unpacked just yet?"

"I haven't gotten around to it. I'm a busy man." he said, watching her subtly. "What, you think that's weird or something?"

"Why would you think that?" Sonya raised her eyebrow questioningly. "Do you think that's weird or something?"

Kai’s face contorted into one of confused irritation at her strange question.

“What the hell?” He asked, frowning. “It’s just been a couple of days and I haven’t gotten around to it. What is this alien act about?”

"I have no idea. For me it's cool but it seems like you have a problem with that. Are you not happy here? Not convinced you want to stay? Thinking of leaving?" Sonya asked with seemingly casual tone.

"Things are just...not how I expected them to be." he said, thinking about his own expectations. "I mean so far, no offense, its just been a bunch of weirdos. I thought I was going to learn how to kick ass, but I kinda feel like that isn't going to happen here like it should."

"Yeah... I know what you mean." Sonya agreed, leaned against the back of the chair and straightened out her legs in front of her. "But what other options do you have?" She asked. "The only one I see is going with Magneto."

“Yeah, I heard about him from some of the others. He sounds like he’s much more action-ready than the Professor.” Kai said, thoughtfully. He put out his hand and a book on Sonya’s desk began to float in the air with its own field of gravity. Slowly it spun as he watched it, lost in thought for a few moments. “What’s wrong with a little action?”

Sonya glanced at the book then back at Kai. "Nothing wrong, but at the same time, the Professor seems to be the good guy, I don't know about Magneto. And I have enough of people using me for their own games." She shrugged. "Even if Magneto seems to have similar talents to mine." She paused, sighed and added looking into Kai's eyes. "Are you considering him seriously? Or just talking here?"

“I guess you’ll have to wait and see huh?” He asked, offering a charming wink before dropping the book back into her desk. “But, for now, I’m just going to try and have some fun and roll with the punches.”

Sonya frowned and shrugged. If he didn't want to share, she was not going to press on. Handsome as Kai was, it was below her to play such games. "What do you think about all those... students, including the newest one with a penguin... or what this eagle dog was?"

"Well, this is how I see it. They have animals and I can control the gravity in this building. I can crush a man into a cube; I'm not sure what we're all doing in the same place." he said, smiling slightly, clearly not concerned about being rude. "A bunch of freaks and losers."

"I guess we all have one thing in common. We try to learn how to improve our abilities. This place, even considering its drawbacks, is the best one I know do it." Sonya pointed out with a shrug. "Unless you don't agree?"

He said nothing for several moments, but watched her instead with a passive interest. He found himself wondering about her, likely for the first time. He had been very wrapped up in himself up until this time. He leaned forward, watching her.

“What do you want to do with this power you have, Sonya?” He asked. “Are you here to kick ass or are you a savior?”

"For now, I settle for learning how to use it." Sonya replied. "What about you?" She looked calmly into his eyes. Putting her hands on her thighs she watched him curious of his response.

"I've never been much of a savior." he answered with a grin. "But I'm guessing I should try and do something good with all this power, whatever that means."

Sonya nodded. "Yeah..." She sighed and looked up on the ceiling considering what she heard and saw so far. "The fact is that the place is a bit boring." She said looking at Kai again and winked. "Most of the kids around are socially challenged in one way or the other." She rolled on the chair closer.

“We have to make our own fun then.” He said, still in his relaxed position on her bed. He didn’t have the answers to what he was to do next in his life, but talking wasn’t helping as much as he’d hoped. Now it was time for Plan B: Distraction. “Got any ideas?”

"A few." Sonya replied softer. "Depends on what you consider fun, how much time do you have and if you want to stay in my room or go elsewhere..."

“I think we have a similar idea of what ‘fun’ is in this situation.” He said, quite sure of himself. He stood up and approached her, his eyes fixed on hers intently. “And here is as good a place as any.”

Sonya watched him from her seat with her lips curling slightly. Now he was talking.
